Lib Dem Mayoral Candidate........Brian Paddick or Fiyaz Mughal?

Interested to hear from my pal Fiyaz Mughal this evening that he has been selected as one of our potential candidates for London mayor. Of course Brian Paddick, who is also on the list starts ahead of the game because of his celeb status; however, I would caution against thinking he is an automatic shoo-in. Brian may have been a Lib Dem supporter for some time, but he is a new kid on the block as far as the party goes...........and as we all know, us Lib Dems can be an arsy lot when we think we are being forced down a particular road!

Hmmm, s there any signs that Lib Dems are being forced to choose Brian Paddick? Or are you just saying so because Fiyaz Mughal is your friend, and you want to force Lib Dems down a particular road?

Hi anonymous, whoever you are (?!)

You do give me a lot of credit for influence!!!!! I wouldn't dream of trying to force anyone down any road - but being as I will campaign for anyone I think will do a good job regardless of whether they are friends or not, I will make my decisions on that basis.

This looks like a genuinely interesting selection and good to see diversity within the field. Looks like it will be a contest between Fiyaz and Brian.

It looks like we are going to see a really positive 6 weeks of campaigning with lots of drive and dynamism from candidates. I for one will look at the years of Party work that each has given with what they will give for the future.

I think you are right. This is a contest between Fiyaz and Brian. What is interesting is that Brian has been pushed to stand by those people in Cowley Street in 'the shadows,' though do not write anything off with Fiyaz. He is capable and is able to put up a good fight!

Just a small detail or two...

There is a third candidate, Chamali Fernando, so we should consider her too.

I'm intrigued by the idea of 'those people in Cowley Street in the shadows' though. Bear in mind that the vacancy had to be readvertised, and individuals might have felt it preferable to find a credible candidate than to sit, wait and hope that someone might come along.

Anonymous conspiracy theorists, don't you just love them?

You do have to feel for her - it took BBC News 24 a couple of tries to get her gender right today, which some worthy blogger spotted before you can say "two-horse race". Perhaps the Beeb plan to make amends by running thousand-word profiles of the two non-celeb candidates. Or then again perhaps not.

Lindyloo, any chance you could provide me with a link to the Faith Matters website, if there is one? I googled your pal Fiyaz and I' keep seeing it mentioned but not being able to link to it. I'm a primary school teacher and we're doing a project on interfaith collaboration (yes, we will be quite heavily watering it down!)

Chamali Fernando's website is at: http://www.chamali4london.com/ and now seems to include a video message
